Job Description:

TOTE Maritime Alaska, the leader in safe and reliable service to Alaska, is seeking an expert and highly motivated Environmental Specialist for our Port of Tacoma office to join our team.

The Environmental Compliance Specialist is responsible for the implementation and administration of environmental policies, programs, and trainings at TOTE Maritime Alaska's marine terminal facilities in Tacoma, WA and Anchorage, AK. This position will be based in Tacoma with regular work trips to Anchorage, AK. These programs include but are not limited to industrial wastewater discharges, storm water pollution prevention, air quality, oil handling and spill prevention, and handling or shipment of hazardous wastes and materials.

Ensures compliance with all state, federal environmental laws and regulations as well as corporate environmental policies. Works in collaboration with TOTE terminal staff, key partners and vendors. Works under the supervision of the Director of Safety.

Main Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Track and interpret laws or regulations impacting the business and offers suggestions to functional managers seeking to ensure compliance. Support operations dealing with government agencies on environmental matters affecting the company.
  • Manage periodic tests, audits, or inspections of organizational processes or facilities and reports findings to management. Collect and analyzes environmental samples, interprets findings, recommend and implement corrective action as needed.
  • Assist in identifying gaps in documentation, or potential areas of non-compliance, and suggests resolutions. Gather input of alleged compliance violations and calls out to executive leadership.
  • Build successful cross-business partnerships by effectively communicating with internal partners, including Environmental, Safety, Risk Management, Human Resources, Operations, Engineering and all other departments and employees.
  • Establish exceptional relationships with team and others to foster a continuous improvement environment.
  • Resolve individual and organizational conflict by using effective negotiation and mediation strategies, including through constructively seeking appropriate internal assistance.
  • Implement risk management goals of training programs consistent with governmental regulations and team member needs. Deliver environmental compliance-related training sessions.
  • Mitigate risk exposure by identifying sources of risk and developing needed programs, policies, and procedures. Avoid legal challenges by working collaboratively to understand the impact of current and proposed legislation.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and manage environmental program audits to reduce risks and consequences of non-compliance. Ideal Candidate Will Have:
    • Associate Degree (AA) and 4+ years of related experience, or equivalent of other relative experience. A bachelor's degree is preferred with a minimum of 2 years related experience.
    • Ability to persuasively connect with all levels of management and team members at various locations. Strong training, reporting, data analyzing, and presentation skills.
    • Current training certifications or ability to obtain certifications as vital for specific job tasks within 6 months of hire date, including HAZWOPER, DOT HazMat, Spill Response, Storm Water, etc. KNOWLEDGE, Skills and Abilities
      • Handles moderately difficult environmental issues and problems and refers more complex issues to Director and/or higher-level team members.
      • Possess solid understanding of environmental regulations for Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, RCRA, and SPCC.
      • Strong analytical, influential, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Implements useful work plans that drive compliance outcomes.
      • Must be committed to improvement with the ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department as well as the overall organization.
      • Use of computers to communicate, collect, analyze and synthesize data, and for presentations, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and other operations applications is required.
        Work Environment

        Works outdoors and in an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level. Some travel required for attending seminars, meetings, and visiting TOTE locations (Alaska).

        Salary range is $66,000 - $122,000 with an anticipated starting range $75,000 - $90,000. Pay will be based on several factors including the candidate's education, work experience, work location and specific job duties.
