Serving Tacoma, Gig Harbor, the Key Peninsula, online students and the women's prisons, TCC educates about 11,000 students annually. Many TCC students are the first in their families to attend college, 58 percent receive financial aid, 13 percent have children, 42 percent are students of color, and 48 percent work while attending school. TCC has multiple campuses: the main campus is in Tacoma, another is in Gig Harbor, and two additional sites are maintained at the Washington Corrections Centers for Women. Position SummaryPerform skilled gardening tasks requiring knowledge of cultivation and maintenance of trees, lawns and ornamental plants. Responsibilities include testing soils, pruning, transplanting plant materials and applying chemicals. This position maintains the grounds on the Tacoma and Gig Harbor campuses. This position reports to the Director of Facilities and Capital Projects. Essential Functions Prepare soil for planting; plant seed, sod, turf, bulbs, plants, trees and shrubs. Seed, mow, irrigate, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge, aerate and maintain lawns. Operate power and motorized equipment such as week trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers. Use a variety of manual tools and equipment such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edgers, shovels, wheelbarrows and pesticide sprayers. Transplant seedlings, trees, shrubs, and assorted nursery stock. Prune, spray and fertilize trees, shrubs, and ground covers. Rake and remove leaves; control weeds by pulling, hoeing and/or spraying. Apply pesticides and herbicides to greenery and plant material observing applicable safety regulations. Remove debris, leaves, brush, snow and ice from areas such as walks, stairs, roads, ramps and parking facilities. Apply ice melter, sand and gravel. Clean, service and maintain tools and equipment including power equipment; perform preventive maintenance according to established procedures and regulations Install and maintain campus fences, signs, etc. Install, maintain and repair irrigation and storm drainage systems. Collect and remove accumulated litter on campus, in parking areas and along the campus perimeter. May supervise lower level staff. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or equivalent. Physical ability to do the work. One year experience in a related field of grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care or landscaping. Conditions of Employment Successful completion of a criminal history background check prior to employment. Current, valid, unrestricted driver's license. Pesticide Applicators License or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment. Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs., repeatedly. Willing and able to work in adverse conditions: Willing and able to work in adverse conditions such as rain, fog, ice, snow, wind, extreme ambient temperatures (heat or cold), to perform normal ground maintenance and clearing of roadways, walkways, stairways, etc. Ability to walk, bend, stoop and stand for long periods of time. Proof of completed COVID-19 Vaccination or valid exemption is required upon hiring and employment at TCC. The Successful Candidate Must Demonstrate Excellent customer service skills; including building and maintaining internal/external customer satisfaction. Ability to accept personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of work. Able to be relied upon to achieve excellent results with little need for oversight. Utilizing knowledge of equipment, skillfully control tools, machines and vehicles to transport goods or people, or to create work products that fully satisfy the demands of the assignment. Ability to earn the trust, respect, and confidence of coworkers and customers through consistent honesty, forthrightness and professionalism in all interactions. The ability to foster a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and appreciation. Results orientation and initiative including resourcefulness in problem solving. Understanding and following applicable laws, regulations and other standards to establish and/or maintain a safe work environment. Terms of Employment This is a full-time classified overtime eligible position scheduled to work Tuesday through Friday, 6:30am - 5:00pm. The salary range is $2,612 to $3,270 per month, DOE/DOQ. Tacoma Community College offers a generous benefits package to include: life, health, dental and long-term disability insurance, state retirement, vacation leave, sick leave and holiday pay. A collective bargaining agreement exists and membership in the Washington Federation of State Employees or payment of a service fee may be available within 30 calendar days of employment.
