This is a rotating Full Time position scheduled for Mon-Fri 8-5PM. Apply today JOB SUMMARY Provides direct patient care, as part of a perioperative (operating room) team, assisting the operating surgeon by performing activities such as maintaining hemostasis, providing wound exposure, manipulating tissues with surgical instrumentation (e.g. suturing, wound closure) and other related tasks. An incumbent uses acquired and intuitive knowledge to anticipate, prevent and/or respond to circumstances that could compromise the patients well-being; documents patient/family pre-operative care and teaching, operative roles following surgical procedure, post-operative care/assessment and discharge planning in accordance with established guidelines. Work is performed under the direction of an operating surgeon and within scope of practice. JOB FUNCTIONS: Provides knowledge-based technical assistance to the operating surgeon during operative procedure within scope of licensure and according to state regulation and facility/practice protocols. --- Prepares and administers medications perioperatively, as directed by the operating surgeon and anesthesiologist; assists with patient positioning, skin preparation and draping; --- Provides and maintains exposure of the operative site through appropriate use of instruments, retractors (e.g. by placing and moving the retractors when necessary, with awareness to anatomical structures), retraction suturing, suctioning, packing and sponging techniques; --- Provides and maintains hemostasis to reduce potential for fluid volume deficit by clamping and/or ligating vessels, using electrosurgical or laser units, applying direct pressure, applying chemical agents that promote coagulation and other means as directed by the operating surgeon; selects and uses the optimal hemostatic mechanism(s) depending on tissue characteristics and specific situation; --- Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose as directed by the operating surgeon; demonstrates manual dexterity in the appropriate use surgical instrumentation; places drains as surgically indicated; assists with cannulation and decanulation procedures; --- Handles and dissects tissues, in collaboration with the operating surgeon, to reduce potential for injury or compromised blood supply and facilitate an optimum surgical outcome; --- Assists in closure of wound or independently closes wound under the direction of operating surgeon, using suture and suturing techniques that promote wound healing; sutures muscle, fascia, subcutaneous and skin tissue, selecting the appropriate suture material and suturing technique(s) for the type of closure to be performed. Collaborates with other healthcare team members in pre-operative assessment and planning for surgical patients, and to develop, coordinate and implement a perioperative plan of care that is unique to individual patient needs and encompasses the continuum of care. --- Communicates plan of care and pertinent clinical data as appropriate, and modifies nursing diagnoses based on ongoing patient assessment of the patients health status throughout the perioperative experience. Assesses the patient intra-operatively for prevention or early detection of perioperative complications. --- Recognizes clinical and diagnostic changes in patient states; evaluates patient response to care and revises plan based on ongoing assessment and goal/outcome attainment; --- Initiates action related to patients change in condition and/or unexpected response to care; participates in the development and implementation of patient/family teaching as necessary. Maintains perioperative skills necessary to independently function as a circulator/scrub nurse as needed. Documents and communicates identified nursing diagnoses based on patients condition and clinical situation. --- Communicates changes in patients status to appropriate members of the healthcare team as intervention progresses; --- Recognizes teaching opportunities and provides age-specific and culturally sensitive teaching in a matter that promotes safe patient care. Performs post-operative follow-up to monitor and assess patients immediate post-operative status to determine progress toward expected outcomes or signs/symptoms of potential post-operative complications. --- Instructs the patient/family to assist the patient in the achievement of optimal health status; performs post-operative patient evaluation and teaching; --- Contributes to the discharge planning process by collaborating with multi-disciplinary team(s) and other disciplines to provide consistency and continuity of patient care. Cultural Sensitivity and Competence: Demonstrates proper use of communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services. Patient Population Served: Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the departments defined specific populations served. Performs related duties as required. Education/Work Experience Requirements Associate degree in nursing or BNS degree. Successful completion of an accredited/approved post-graduate RN First Assistant education program (acceptable to the Association of Operating Room Nurses [AORN] and that meets the statues, regulations and organizational standards relevant to RNFA credentialing standards), and four year of diversified OR nursing work experience (e.g. scrub and/or circulator) in an acute care setting that would demonstrate attainment of the requisite job knowledge/skills.
