Magnuson Nature Programs is dedicated to bringing quality nature education to children, adults, and families through hands-on, experiential learning in the diverse natural areas, ecosystems, and cultivated gardens inside Warren G. Magnuson Park. The program is sponsored by Magnuson Community Center and the Associated Recreation Council, a non-profit partner with Seattle Parks & Recreation. In 2017, it will also include teaching two programs that are funded by a grant from the King Conservation District: Free field trips for 2nd and 3rd grade students from Seattle Public Elementary Schools that have a high percentage of students who receive free or reduced-fee lunch Free family nature walks for low-income residents of the Solid Ground housing inside Magnuson Park The Magnuson Nature Programs Environmental Assistant Director is a part-time, seasonal position that will coordinate and carry out environmental education programs for children, families, and seniors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Programs include school field trips, nature camps during summer and other school breaks, public nature walks, special events, and other programs that promote environmental stewardship. Schedule/Employment Period: This position will begin in mid-March 2017. Most spring programs are held Tuesday through Thursday, and Saturdays, with some exceptions. Summer programs are Monday through Friday. Staff on-site orientation will be held on Tuesday March 14 and Thursday March 16 Staff and docent trainings will be held on Saturdays March 18, March 25, and April 1 Spring field trip season is Tuesday through Thursdays from March 27 " June 8, with an occasional Monday field trip Family Nature Walks, Special Events, Custom Nature Walks and Classes are held on two to four Saturdays each month, beginning in mid-March There is a strong possibility for continued part-time employment beyond spring and summer 2017, in the following programs: Summer camp season is Monday through Friday from June 12 " September 1. Workdays begin at 8:30am and end at 1:00pm, 2:00pm, or 4:00pm depending on the camp. Camps that are held during other Seattle Public School breaks such as the week of Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Mid-Winter Break, Spring Break, and teacher development days. Workdays begin at 8:30am and end at 4:00pm. We are currently working on possibly starting a morning nature preschool to begin in September 2017 and coincide with the Seattle Public School annual school year calendar The exact plans and schedule for the Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 field trips, camps, classes, and other programs is to be determined once the nature preschool plans are finalized in April or early May Future program and camp dates, including dates of employment, to be determined by ARC and Magnuson Nature Programs Responsibilities: Working closely with Magnuson Nature Programs Director/Lead Educator to: Refine and implement existing field trip, nature walk, nature class and camp curricula Create new curricula as needed Assist with outreach to teachers and other school staff, and with Magnuson Nature Docent volunteers Assist with evaluating program results and reporting for the Magnuson Community Center Advisory Council and King Conservation District Plan the quarterly schedules, new programs and events as needed Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in an Environmental Education field of study, or equivalent training and experience Demonstrated ability for leading children and adults in outdoor learning Demonstrated ability and experience in project collaboration and teamwork Strong understanding of the science of watersheds and water quality, habitat needs for birds, insects, and marine life, and plant/animal relationships Familiarity with Common Core standards and Next Generation Science Standards Intermediate computer skills with Excel and Word, and willingness to learn new applications if necessary Strong communication skills, both oral and written Demonstrated enthusiasm for and/or experience relating to and working with a variety of ethnicities, cultures, and age groups Preferred Requirements: Experience in supervising and/or training other employees Intermediate or advanced identification skills for Pacific Northwest native plants, birds, mammals, insects, aquatic invertebrates, and/or other wildlife Intermediate or advanced organic gardening experience Fluency in Spanish or another foreign language This is a part-time and seasonal position at $17.50 - $20.00 per hour, depending on experience. Sick leave benefits will accrue according to number of hours worked, but there are no health insurance benefits.
