Description A Senior Materials Engineer (PVC Compounding) job in Tacoma, WA, is available at Milgard Windows and Doors. You will know the chemical and extrusion industry, processes, and systems or similar business practices in research and development, with five-plus years of experience in or adjacent to a manufacturing environment. You are responsible for defining and understanding the process and formulation for PVC compounding with the potential to expand the technology into commercialization. Optimize PVC compounding with extrusion processing, material cost, and product performance. Increase the business' testing capabilities to characterize PVC formulations. This position is an expert role geared toward increasing the company's PVC science and knowledge and potential to grow into a technical leadership role. Senior Materials Engineer job responsibilities include: Responsible for leading current and alternative compounding design and formulation Prepare equipment and facilities for material testing and characterization to support Process design --- mass and energy balance, process equipment specification Document scientific method and findings Communicate scientific and technical development to the management team Evaluate supplier products and components based on the ability to meet required quality standards Work with suppliers to obtain resources that meet required specifications. Employs numerical optimization methods Maintains project focus and alignment to meet needed project deadlines Lead cross-functional teams throughout North America to enhance product offerings and standardize supplies and processes Support product engineering with design, development, and evaluation of material for product innovation Assist warranty/service department with component weathering issues/analysis Process economics calculations related to the extrusion and compounding processes Provide support and planning for manufacturing facilities related to PVC formulation Adhere to existing and assist in continuous improvement of Miter engineering standards Performs all other duties as assigned Requirements 5 years in PVC compounding and extrusion Education and Experience Options:Bachelors in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry Masters or Ph.D. relevant to PVC compounding, processing, and extrusion Knowledge of chemical and extrusion industry, processes, and systems or similar business practices in research and development relevant to a manufacturing environment Experience with window and door design and manufacturing is not required but would be beneficial. Demonstrated project and team leadership Fluent in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Practical knowledge of process improvement tools: Lean, Six Sigma, TPM, Value Stream Mapping, 5S, etc. Robust supplies analysis, problem-solving, concept modeling, and mathematical skills.
